Infield Fly with Runner Interference
With no outs and bases loaded, the batter hits a high pop-up near second base. The umpires correctly call an infield fly. While the ball is still in flight, the runner at second base (R2) retreats back toward second base, but R2 runs into the shortstop and prevents the shortstop from catching the infield fly. The runner at third base advances safety to home while the runner at first base remains at first base.
The offensive coach agrees that the batter is out on the infield fly, but since the batter was already declared out, the shortstop did not need to catch the infield fly and therefore need not be protected. In addition. the coach reminds the umpire that the shortstop was blocking R2's attempt to return to second base. Since the shortstop dropped infield fly, R3 should be allowed to advance and R2 should be allowed to remain at second base.
The defense coach wants the batter and R2 declared out and R3 returned to third base. What do the umpires do now?
