Game Situation: Out of Play

The runner on first base (R1) is stealing on the pitch. The batter grounds to the shortstop. The shortstop sees that R1 has easily made it to second base, so he throws to first base (after R1 touches 2nd base). The throw to 1st is wild and goes out of play. At the time of the throw, R1 had reached second base. The offensive coach agrees that each runner should be awarded two bases -- the batter gets 2nd base and R1 gets home. The defensive coach thinks that is too generous. What do the umpires do?

Call
Since the ball was thrown out of play, there is a two base award for both R1 and the batter. The umpire must first determine if the award is from the time of the pitch (TOP) or the time of the throw (TOT). If the first throw (or play) by an infielder goes out of play, the award is from TOP -- so in this case -- R1 is awarded 3rd base and the batter is awarded 2nd base. The offensive coach may argue that R1 was already at 2nd base. However, at the TOP, the last base that R1 had legally acquired was 1st base.

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION:
Very similar to the above question, R1 is stealing on the pitch and the batter grounds to the shortstop. The shortstop fields the ball and runs to 2nd base to try to force-out R1. It is a really close play at 2nd base but the base umpire calls the runner "SAFE". The shortstop then throws toward 1st base in attempt to retire the batter. The throw to 1st is wild and goes out of play. Where do the umpires place the runners? Again, the offense argues R1 goes home and the batter goes to 2nd. The defense argues R1 to 3rd base and the batter to 2nd.

As mentioned above, the award is two bases. The shortstop's throw was the first THROW by an infielder -- so that would normally make the award from TOP. However, the shortstop's attempt to force out R1 at 2nd base is considered a PLAY -- so the award is from the TOT. At the TOT, R1 had acquired 2nd base and the batter had not yet acquired 1st base -- so R1 is awarded home and the batter is awarded 2nd base. The defensive coach will surely want a detailed explanation of R1's award!
