Game Situation: Place the Runners

With no outs and no base runners, the batter (B1) hits a grounder to right field. The right fielder quickly fields the ball and throws the ball to first base to try to retire B1. Had the throw been accurate, B1 would have likely been retired at first base, but the throw is wild and goes out of play. The umpires must now award B1 two bases on the over-throw.

The offensive coach wants B1 awarded 3rd base, since B1 was well-past 1st base when the ball went out of play. The defensive coach wants B1 awarded 2nd base -- just like a wild throw from an infielder that is thrown of out play. What does the umpire do now?

This is a two base award. On this throw from the outfielder that goes out of play, the award is determined from the base occupied at the time of the right fielder's throw. Since B1 was between home and first base, B1 is awarded second base.
