Out of Play

While some of the regional fields are now fully enclosed with fences, many fields are still not enclosed and balls are thrown, pitched, and batted out of play.

#1 Runner on first and a left handed pitcher. While on the rubber, the pitcher attempts a legal pick off of the runner on first (R1), but throws past the first baseman and out of play. Place R1.

Call
When the ball is thrown into dead-ball area it is immediately dead (5-1-1.g3) and R1 is advanced one base to second base when thrown from the pitcher's plate: 8-3-3.d.

#2 With a runner on first and a right handed pitcher, the pitcher legally steps back off the rubber and throws to first in an attempt to pick off R1. The ball goes past the first baseman and out of play. Place R1.

#3 With a runner on first, the pitcher legally delivers to the batter for ball-one. The catcher whips a throw down to the first baseman in an attempt to pick off R1. The ball hits the first baseman in the knee and bounces out of play. Place R1 (while the first baseman rolls on the ground in pain!).
