Player or Pitcher?
You may think it is baseball trivia, but it is important for an umpire to know who is the "pitcher of record". An umpire this weekend told me this was "baseball trivia" and don't bother generating a quiz in this area. That further motivated me to generate this quiz. If he does not answer (or answers incorrectly), I'll understand.
The pitcher of record must pitch (with a few notable exceptions) to at least one batter. There are announced and unannounced pitching changes.
1. When does an announced pitching change become the pitcher of record (and must throw to at least one batter)?
a. When the head coach tells the plate umpire of the pitching change
b. When the new pitcher throws 1 warm-up pitch from the rubber
c. When the new pitcher throws all 8 warm-up pitches from the rubber
d. When the plate umpire makes the ball live
e. When the new pitcher throws his first pitch to the batter
f. None of the above. You have your own idea that is not included in the above answers (hint, you are wrong, but I welcome your email).
2. New defensive or offensive players should be reported to the plate umpire and reported to the opposing coach. However, there is no penalty if you do not report legal substitutions. When does an unannounced pitcher become the pitcher of record (and must throw to at least one batter)?
a. When the head coach finally tells the plate umpire of the pitching change
b. When the new pitcher throws 1 warm-up pitch from the rubber
c. When the new pitcher throws all 8 warm-up pitches from the rubber
d. When the plate umpire makes the ball live
e. When the new pitcher throws his first pitch
f. None of the above. You have your own idea that is not included in the above answers (hint, you are wrong, but I welcome your email).
