Pitcher Using Different Motion on Each Pitch
With no outs and bases loaded, the defense brings in a new pitcher. As the new pitcher delivers pitches to several batters, the offensive coach notices several issues and thinks a balk should be called. The coach correctly points out that nearly each pitch from this new pitcher has had very different delivery mechanics.
1. Runner are on base, but some pitches are from the windup position and others are from the set position
2. When in the wind-up, sometimes the pitcher starts with his hands together in front of his body, sometimes both hands are at his side, and sometimes one hand is at his side and the other hand is in front.
3. When in the set position, the pitcher is coming set at a different location on different pitches -- ranging from well below his belt to about at the level of his chin.
4. When in the set position, sometimes the pitcher comes to a stop for less than a second, but other times for longer (2-10 seconds).
The coach correctly points out that these motions are confusing and deceiving his runners. Are any of these something the umpire should warn or penalize?
