Leaping with Catcher's Obstruction
With no outs and a runner on 2nd base (R2), the batter doubles to the outfield -- so R2 is going to attempt to score. The catcher positions himself in front of home plate and attempts to field the hard-thrown low bouncing throw from the outfield. The catcher believes he has fielded the throw, so he enters the baseline to tag R2. However, the ball has skipped under the catcher's glove to the backstop. In an effort to avoid contact with the catcher, R2 leaps over the catcher and touches the plate.
The defensive coach argues that R2 should be out for leaping (NF 8-4-2d prohibits leaping).
The offensive coach argues that the catcher cannot be in the baseline without the ball, and obstruction should be called. In addition, R2 was try to avoid contact and injury to the catcher and his runner. What does the umpire do now?
