Catch with Detached Equipment?

The batter hits a hard line drive towards the shortstop. The shortstop leaps, the ball goes into his glove, but the hard line drive rips the glove off the shortstop's hand. The glove falls to the ground with the ball securely in the glove. Meanwhile the batter runs safely to first base.

The defensive coach argues that the shortstop caught the ball and the batter should be out (NF 2-9-1).

The offensive coach argues that this is clearly a case of detached equipment touching a
batted ball and there is a 3-base award (NF 8-3-3b).

What does the umpire do now?

Call
A catch is when the fielder gains secure possession of the ball in his hand or glove and firmly holds the ball (NF 2-9-1).

Detached equipment that is used to intentionally contact a batted ball, thrown ball, or a pitch is penalized (NF 8-3-3).

In the situation below, the batted ball was not caught nor was it intentionally contacted by detached equipment -- so the batter is safe at first base.
