Out of Play on Double Play Attempt

The speedy runner on first base (R1) is stealing on the pitch. The batter (B1) grounds to the shortstop, who fields the grounder and throws to the second baseman covering 2nd base. R1 slides into 2nd base before the throw, so the field umpire calls R1 "safe". The second baseman sees that he still has time to attempt to retire B1 before B1 gets to 1st base, so he throws to 1st base. However, the second baseman's throw is wild and goes out of play.

Where do the umpires award R1 and B1?

Call
When the defense throws the ball out of play, it is a two base award (NF 8-3-3c).  If the throw is the first play by an infielder, the award to the runners is from their position at the time of the pitch. For any subsequent play by an infielder, the award to the runners is from their position at the time of the throw.

In the situation below, the shortstop's attempt to retire R1 was the first play by an infielder. The second baseman threw the ball out of play on the next play (attempting to retire B1), so the award to R1 and B1 is two bases from their position at the time of the throw. R1 is awarded home while B1 is awarded second base.
