Runner Interference in the Running Lane?
The batter (B1) lays down a fair bunt down the first base line. The catcher fields the fair ball as the B1 runs toward first base in fair territory. Even after getting half-way to first base, B1 continues to run with both feet in fair territory. The catcher moves to try to find a clear throwing lane, cocks his arm to throw, but B1 is running directly in his throwing lane. The catcher never throws the ball for fear of hitting and hurting B1. B1 is safe at first. B1 was outside the runner's lane on his entire trip to first base. What should the umpires do now?
