Foul Tip or Foul Ball?

With no outs and a 1-2 count, the runner on first base (R1) is stealing on the pitch. The batter swings at the pitch, his bat tips the pitch, the ball goes sharply/directly to the catcher's chest protector, and then the ball is secured by the catcher in his glove before the ball touches the ground (or anything else). R1 arrives safely at second base.

Which of the following two answers apply to this play:
A) This is a caught third strike and the batter is out.
B) This is a foul ball so the batter remains at the plate with a 1-2 count.
C) R1 remains at second base
D) R1 must return to first base

Call
To be a foul tip (and therefore a strike and remain live), the ball must first go sharply/directly from the bat to either of the catcher's hands -- and then be legally caught (NF 2-16-2). In the play below, the tipped ball went first to the catcher's chest protector -- so it is a foul ball. R1 must return to first base (Answers "B" and "D").
