Thrown Ball Out of Play from Outfield

With no outs and a runner (R1) on 1st base, the batter (B1) hits a line drive to right field. The right fielder makes the catch for the first out with R1 about 15 feet from 1st base. The right fielder throws to 1st base and would have doubled up R1, but the throw is wild. As R1 stands on 1st base, the ball rolls into the 1st base dugout. Where should R1 be placed on this ball that is thrown out-of-play?

A. First base -- since that was the base that R1 was running towards when the ball was thrown and since R1 was occupying 1st base when the ball went out-of-play
B. Second base -- R1 is awarded two bases... the base he was heading towards (1st base) plus one more base (2nd base)
C. Third base -- because the umpires should be generous. Thus far, the offensive team has been a lot nicer to the umpires than the defense team

Call
When the ball is thrown out of play by an outfielder, the ball is immediately dead and all runners are awarded two bases from the runner's position at the time that the ball is released by the outfielder. It does not matter what direction the runner is traveling nor does it matter the position of the runners when the ball goes out of play.

In the play, R1 is between 1st and 2nd base when the right fielder released his throw -- so R1 is awarded 3rd base.
