Place the Runners after Out of Play


With a runner (R3) on 3rd base, the batter (B1) hits a ground ball to the 1st baseman, who is playing deep. The 1st baseman fields the ball and it is a foot-race to 1st base. B1 touches 1st base just before the 1st baseman tags the bag, so B1 is safe. The 1st baseman then throws home to try to retire R3 at home. The throw is wild and goes into the dugout. Where should the umpires place B1?

While the first baseman's throw home was the first throw by an infielder, it was not the first play by an infielder. The first play of the batted ball was the attempted put-out at first base. The award for the ball thrown out of play in this situation is two bases from the time of the throw. Since B1 had already acquired first base at the time of the throw, B1 is awarded third base.
