Game Situation: Two Obstructions on One Play

The lead-off batter (B1) hits a fair deep drive to left field -- over the left fielder's head and all the way to the fence. B1 runs into the first baseman (who is standing on first base). The field umpire calls obstruction. B1 recovers and heads to 2nd base. About 3 feet from 2nd base, the second baseman is standing in the baseline and B1 collides with him. The base umpire again calls obstruction. B1 recovers and makes the turn at second base, but then returns safely to second base. Is the call:

a. Dead ball on the first obstruction at first base, so B1 is awarded second base.
b. Since both of the obstructions occurred before B1 reached 2nd base, he is awarded 2nd base.
c. B1 is awarded one base for each obstruction, so he is awarded home.
d. The field umpire felt that B1 would have reached 3rd base (had there been no obstruction), so B1 is awarded third base.

Call
On obstruction, the runner is awarded at least one base. The umpire should award the runner the additional bases that would nullify the obstructions (NF 8-3-2). In this case, we went with answer "D".
