Batted Ball Strikes the Field Umpire: Three Cases

1. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, the infield is playing back. The batter hits a hard ground ball towards the shortstop. The batted ball strikes the field umpire before getting to the shortstop, but the shortstop is still able to field the ball and easily able to force out the runner at 2nd base for the 3rd out. What is the call?

Call
Since the batted ball had not passed a fielder (other than the pitcher), the ball is immediately dead when it strikes the field umpire. The batter is awarded 1st base and the runners that are forced will advance (in this case, all of them). One run scores.

2. With a runner at 3rd base (R3) and no outs, the batter hits a hard line drive that hits off the pitcher's glove, but then strikes the field umpire. R3 scores and the batter ends up safe at 1st base. What is the call?

Call
Since the batted ball has been touched by a defensive player, the ball remains live and play continues. One run scores.

3. No outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd base. The infield is playing in, but the outfield is playing deep. The batter hits a hard ground ball that goes thru the shortstop's legs, strikes the field umpire, and then dies/settles in short left field. Two runs score and the batter ends up on 2nd base. What is the call?
