Collision at Shortstop

With one out and a runner on 2nd base (R2), the batter (B1) hits a chopper at the shortstop. As third baseman are taught, the 3rd baseman cuts in front of the shortstop, fields the ball, and throws to 1st base to easily retire B1. However, as the third baseman fielded the ball, the shortstop and R2 collide about 5-6 feet behind the 3rd baseman. R2 recovers and limps safely into 3rd base. What do the umpires call?

A) R2 interfered with a fielder in a position to field a batted ball, so R2 is out
B) The shortstop obstructed R2, so R2 would have been awarded 3rd base, if he had not made it there safely
C) The shortstop obstructed R2, so award R2 home
D) Neither the shortstop nor R2 were involved in the play so this is nothing, play on

Call
When two defensive players are making a play on a batted ball, the umpires must decide which player to protect. In this situation, although the shortstop was in a position to field the batted ball, the third baseman cut in front to field the ball -- so the 3rd baseman is protected. The shortstop obstructed R2. Had R2 not made it safely to 3rd base, he would have been awarded that base. Since the ball never left the infield, an award of home did not seem reasonable. So the call is "B".
