Game Situation: Place the Runners

With one out and bases loaded, the batter hits a line-drive to the shortstop, which is caught for the second out of the inning. After the catch, the shortstop sees that R3 is about 3 feet from 3rd base, R2 is about 3 feet from 2nd base, but R1 is about 20 feet from first base -- so the shortstop throws over to 1st base in attempt to complete an inning-ending double play. However, the shortstop's throw gets past the 1st baseman and out of play. Where do the umpires place R3, R2, and R1?

Extra Credit: Is there any problem if each runner advances to his awarded base without properly tagging up by re-tagging their base? Do you have to tag-up when the umpire awards you a base in this situation?

In this case, each runner is awarded two bases -- so R3 and R2 score and R1 is placed on 3rd base. That is a lot of advancement for a ball that did not travel very far -- but that is the rule!

Extra Credit: Runners must complete their base running responsibilities, even when the ball is dead. Each runner advanced, but did not complete their responsibility to re-tag before advancing. The runners are not immediately out, but they will be out if properly appealed by the defense.

It is important to note which runner the defense appeals for the third out. If they appeal R3, then no runs score... R2 then one run scores, R1 then two runs score.
