Lefty Pitcher Throws Out of Play

With a runner on first and a left handed pitcher -- the runner is stealing on the pitcher's very first motion, but the pitcher legally steps towards first base and throws to the first baseman. The throw is wild and bounces off the first baseman's glove and slowly rolls a long distance (with the first baseman chasing) and eventually goes out of play. By the time the ball goes out of play, the runner has made the turn at second and is well on the way to third. When the ball goes out of play, where does the umpire place the runner?

In this situation (pitcher, while in contact with the pitching rubber, throws the ball out of play) the award is one base from the time of the throw. Therefore, the runner is awarded second base only.
