Game Situation: Rundown Thrown Out of Play

During a rundown between first base and second base -- the runner is heading back to first base and is only a step away from first base when the fielder's throw hits the runner in the helmet and goes out of play behind first base. The defensive coach thinks that the runner got in the way of the throw, so the runner is out. The offensive coach thinks the runner should be awarded second base. What does the umpire think?

Coaches may argue for less bases awarded ("Blue!, the runner was heading back to 1st base!" or "Blue!, my 2nd baseman did not throw the ball out of play -- it was last touched by the runner!")...

...but assuming that the throw that went out-of-play was not the first throw by an infielder -- the runner is awarded two bases from the time of the throw -- namely -- 3rd base.
