Substitution after Injury

The offensive team's 3rd baseman twists his ankle as he makes the 3rd out of the inning. As the coach checks him out in the dugout, a reserve player goes out to 3rd base to take warm up throws -- thinking he is in the game. As the catcher throws the last warm-up throw down to second, the coach sends the starting 3rd baseman back out to play 3rd. Was the starting 3rd baseman ever out of the game? Is the starting 3rd baseman's return a substitute?

Call
In both the NF and MLB, an unannounced defensive substitute is not in the game until the ball is made live (NF 3.1.1c)  -- so the starting third baseman can return to play third and it does not count as a substitution.
