Fake Pickoff Attempt with Obstruction?
With a runner on second base (R2), the pitcher properly disengages the pitching rubber and legally fakes a throw toward 2nd base. R2 dives back into 2nd base.
On the fake throw, the shortstop, second baseman, and centerfield each begin to run towards a spot in the outfield as if to chase a wild throw from the pitcher. Both R2 and the 3rd base coach believe the ball has been thrown into the outfield, so R2 runs toward 3rd base and is easily retired by a throw from the pitcher to the 3rd baseman.
The coach of the offensive wants the umpire to call "obstruction" and award R2 third base -- just as would be called when a defensive player fakes a tag. The coach also thinks that these actions constitute unsportsmanlike conduct and there must be a rule in NF 3-3-1 to address it.
What does the umpire do?
